The Great Computer Build

Building a PC for personal use is essentially still a hobby. However, most of the PC industry started out as a hobby and has transferred into a billion dollar industry. Heard of Apple? They are now the most valuable company…ever.

Aside from the parts that go into making a computer, manufactures must consider the cost to build it, market it, and eventually the sale price. That is our goal and our next project!

Using Logical Increments, you will build a computer that is built to sell. You will then create an advertisement and “sell” your PC to your peers throughout PV. Students may purchase your computer by spending their “money” on your computer. Around here, money = M&Ms. Each student that comes to purchase a computer will be given 10 M&M’s. Each M&M represents $200. They may choose to purchase a computer and eat the leftovers.

For instance, Jon is given 10 M&Ms ($2,000) and has a choice of Computer A ($600) Computer B ($1000) and Computer C ($1600). He likes that computer C has the most RAM and comes with the largest HD. He opts for that one and pays with 8 M&Ms and keeps two. Computer C sells one unit.

Some other random rules:

  • Each student is given a budget of $1,000,000 to build their PCs.
  • The formula for deciding the overall winner is as follows
    • $1,000,000 – (cost to produce * amount of units produced) – marketing + revenue
  • You must build at least 50 computers
  • Marketing options include
    • *Print media (display in window) $100,000
    • Website listing on pv.dpene.com $200,000
    • Personal Mr. Pennebacker endorsement said daily to each class $300,000
    • PVTV advertisement video $500,000
  • Anyone can vote but Intro to Computer Science, AP CS and Web Design will be “forced” to participate.

Alright…ready? Set…wait.

You’ll need to use Logical Increments to building your computer. Don’t worry about any peripherals. When choosing your parts, create a Google Doc that lists out each part, the description and the cost. Then, total your amount and that is your unit cost. Next choose how many you want to ship out for production.

Finally, create your media listing. You must choose at least the print option. You will be creating your flyer using any multimedia software that you choose. Here are a few:

  • Pages
  • Photoshop
  • Word
  • Canva

The build will happen today, tomorrow on your own time, Wednesday, advertisements on Thursday and purchasing will begin on Thursday 11:30pm and last until Friday at 2:30pm.
